The Song of Sorrow THE SONG OF PALOMA
Claudia Llosa
Blind. A song that seems a lament. An old lady talks about his past, the terror in her eyes, pain in his veins, and milk with which she raised her child, a daughter of violence. In the opening scene there is the whole tragedy of the story of Faust, the protagonist, was born from one of the many rapes that occurred during the twenty-year conflict that took place in Peru, at the end of the last century, where the violation of human rights had become part of everyday life horrible. Claudia Llosa's film, which won the Berlin Film Festival, is made of the same pain of his characters, suffering with them, and leaves no way out to the viewer, forced to live the suffering of the film, his silences, his painful secret.
Fausta live in poverty on the outskirts of Lima, the impending marriage of his cousin seems to overshadow his mother's death. The nightmare of which she has witnessed from the womb of his mother seems to accompany every step, to the point of putting on a potato to push it into the vagina to have a shield, a protection against ghosts the past that do not give peace to the present, despite the war has been over for years. The only way out against the fear is singing, free improvisation, consoling as a little girl trying to ward off nightmares humming, so Fausta through song tries to free his soul from the terror in which she grew up.
Claudia Llosa recounts with sensitivity all-female a story that could be true, the daughter of history that Peru has experienced the hard way. The images are essential, limited camera movements, the eye of the director seems to get lost in the poverty of the slums, calling the viewer to do likewise. The sets charm, warm and inviting, as if to offer a way out of the silent suffering of the film. For the young Fausta digest milk pain mean to find the road that leads from fear to freedom.
