MEETING OF FAMILY
After 11 years, the Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, returns with a film presented at the last of the Rome Film Festival and distributed only now in Italian cinemas. The young chef Sebastian discovers he is the son of the great opera singer Karl Kristian Schmidt, the visit of the latter in his village of origin. Raised with the belief that his father had committed suicide, Sebastian has stuttered since childhood el'inaspettata revelation will only worsen the situation. In addition, after so many years, finds an old flame of her childhood, Mary, with whom resumed a love affair for which leave his girlfriend Claudia. But the tangled intrigue and misunderstanding each other until the fateful party thrown for the famous singer.
The "funny side" of the film is enhanced by a series of brilliant and funny characters such as the companion of Sebastian's mother or colleagues and friends of the protagonist struggling with the bizarre Swedish chef, in charge of dinner for the party in honor of Schmidt. According to the same Vinterberg, "Family Reunion" is an actual remake of "Festen - family celebration" (film completely adhering to the rules dictated by the Dogma 95 film movement of which the director is a great exponent, together with names like Lars Von Trier and Kristian Levring) in the key of comedy, telling in a fun crisis and family conflict.
But here we are close to the Dogma style. The assembly is fragmented and the obvious errors of fitting this is offset by a bright picture and vivid colors, bringing to an end instead of obscuring the scene, the lights.
Vinterberg is able to offer exciting and impressive visual sequences, such as the run-up to Sebastian on all fours among the colored balloons on the table for dinner. Everything is looked upon with lightness and irony, el'alone drama surrounding the issues addressed are dissolved humor and the desire for truth and growth.
